Just like when we build a house, we need to start by strengthening the
pillars. The higher the house or building, and stronger and more pillars are
needed to make sure the building doesn’t collapse. The same goes to
building a person. To make a better person we need to build them by
strengthening their values. And when the person as individual are strong,
then the organisation will also become strong.
In the public service these core values are known as Tonggak 12. These
core values takes time to build. As students, you can also use the same
principle to make you a better person. The 12 pillars are:
(a) Value of time (menghargai masa);
(b) The success of perseverance (Ketekunan membawa kejayaan);
(c) The pleasure of working (keseronokan bekerja);
(d) The dignity of simplicity (kemuliaan kesederhanaan);
(e) The worth of character (ketinggian peribadi);
(f) The power of kindness (kekuatan sifat baik hati);
(g) The influence of examples (pengaruh teladan);
(h) The obligation of duty (kewajipan menjalankan tugas);
(i) The wisdom of economy (kebijaksanaan berhemat);
(j) The virtue of patience (keutamaan kesabaran);
(k) The improvement of talent (peningkatan bakat); and
(l) The joy of originating (nikmat mencipta).
You can start by strengthening the values one by one. Of course, it takes
time to build. As long as you are willing to improve yourself, that is good
enough.
Today, we are at the beginning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Concurrent to the technological revolution are a set of broader
socio-economic, geopolitical and demographic drivers of change, each
interacting in multiple directions and intensifying one another.
In this new era, there are challenges that you have to face significantly. You
have to equip yourselves with multiple skills that could suit you in any
circumstances of job.
