While these are not modern medical textbooks, many principles highlighted such as moderation, balance, and mindful eating align with what science today recognises as beneficial for overall health.

One example often mentioned is the practice of drinking water:

Beyond spiritual discipline, modern understanding suggests that:

slower intake supports better fluid regulation; and
|

reduces sudden stress on the body

It is not just about how much we drink but how we drink.

Here’s something interesting. Prolonged sitting, something many of us do every day has been associated with reduced circulation in the body, including to the kidneys. Not dramatic. Not immediate. But over time, a more sedentary lifestyle may affect how efficiently our body functions. Which brings us to a simple question, how often do we move, stretch, or even pause during the day? Sometimes, it’s not about doing more but about not staying still for too long.

This is where it gets interesting and actually quite simple. When we talk about the dietary practices of the Prophet ﷺ, it is not about a strict menu or complicated rules. It is about principles:

eating in moderation;
|

|
not overfilling the stomach;
|
2 |
|
choosing wholesome, natural foods;
|
2 |
|
being mindful when eating; and
|
2 |
|
stopping before excess
|
2 |
|
In other words balance over indulgence and awareness over habit. Perhaps, that is the part we often overlook because today, the issue is rarely lack of food but lack of control.

We often thank Allah for the food that enters our body. But rarely do we reflect on what leaves it because the real miracle is not only intake but elimination. Imagine if your body could not remove what it no longer needs. Every toxin retained. Every imbalance accumulated. The ability to “let go” is a mercy we rarely acknowledge.

What is most concerning many people do not realise they are at risk until it is too late.

Often, it is not one big thing. But small, repeated habits:

excessive salt intake;
|

|
chronic dehydration;
|
2 |
|
overuse of certain medications (such as painkillers); and
|
2 |
|
high consumption of ultra-processed foods
|
2 |
|
Not immediately harmful. But over time they add up. Perhaps the question is not, “Are our kidneys working?” But rather, are we working against them without realising it? Today, your kidneys have already done their job. Silently. Precisely. Consistently. Perhaps for the first time, we pause to think about them. Not out of fear but out of awareness. Sometimes, the most important systems in our lives are the ones we never notice.

Dalam karya seperti Zad al-Ma’ad dan Al-Tibb al-Nabawi, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim menghuraikan amalan pemakanan Rasulullah ﷺ. Walaupun ia bukan buku perubatan moden, banyak prinsip yang dibincangkan seperti kesederhanaan, keseimbangan dan kesedaran ketika makan selari dengan apa yang diiktiraf sains hari ini sebagai baik untuk kesihatan.

Antara yang sering disebut ialah cara minum air:

dalam keadaan duduk; dan

secara perlahan dan berperingkat

Selain daripada nilai adab, kajian moden menunjukkan bahawa pengambilan air secara perlahan membantu tubuh mengawal keseimbangan cecair dengan lebih baik. Ia bukan sekadar tentang berapa banyak kita minum tetapi bagaimana kita minum.

Ada satu perkara yang menarik. Duduk terlalu lama, sesuatu yang sangat biasa dalam rutin kita hari ini dikaitkan dengan pengurangan aliran darah dalam badan, termasuk kepada buah pinggang. Bukan sesuatu yang berlaku secara mendadak. Tetapi dalam jangka masa panjang, gaya hidup yang terlalu sedentari boleh memberi kesan kepada kecekapan tubuh. Mungkin persoalannya bukan adakah kita bergerak cukup? Tetapi berapa lama kita tidak bergerak?

Menariknya, konsep pemakanan dalam sunnah sebenarnya sangat sederhana. Ia bukan tentang diet yang kompleks. Tetapi tentang prinsip:

makan secara sederhana;
|

|
tidak berlebihan;
|
4 |
|
memilih makanan yang baik dan bersih;
|
4 |
|
makan dengan kesedaran; dan
|
4 |
|
berhenti sebelum kenyang
|

|
Ringkasnya, keseimbangan, bukan berlebihan dan kesedaran, bukan kebiasaan. Mungkin itulah yang kita semakin hilang hari ini. Kita sering mengucapkan syukur atas makanan yang masuk ke dalam tubuh kita. Tetapi jarang kita berfikir tentang apa yang keluar daripadanya. Sedangkan keajaiban sebenar bukan hanya pada pengambilan tetapi pada penyingkiran. Bayangkan jika tubuh kita tidak mampu membuang apa yang tidak diperlukan. Setiap toksin terkumpul. Setiap ketidakseimbangan berterusan. Keupayaan untuk “melepaskan” itu sendiri adalah satu nikmat.

Paling membimbangkan ramai tidak sedar mereka berisiko. Selalunya, bukan satu perkara besar. Tetapi tabiat kecil yang berulang:

pengambilan garam berlebihan;

kurang minum air;
|

penggunaan ubat tahan sakit secara berlebihan; dan
|

|
makanan ultra-proses

Kita tidak terasa kesannya hari ini. Tetapi dalam jangka masa panjang ia terkumpul.

Mungkin persoalannya bukan, “Adakah buah pinggang kita masih berfungsi?” Tetapi, adakah kita tanpa sedar sedang memudaratkannya? Hari ini, buah pinggang kita telah menjalankan tugasnya. Senyap. Tepat. Konsisten. Mungkin buat pertama kali, kita berhenti seketika untuk memikirkannya. Bukan kerana takut tetapi kerana sedar. Dalam kehidupan ini yang paling penting selalunya adalah yang paling kita tidak perasan.
