The first quarter of the year has passed. In the blink of an eye, time moves on and many of us begin to wonder, where did all that time go? In reality, time has never changed. A day is still 24 hours. A week is still 7 days. What has changed is how we experience time . In psychology, time feels faster when life becomes routine. When our days are repetitive, predictable and lacking new experiences our brain stores fewer “unique memories.” As a result, when we look back, that period of time feels shorter. Almost as if time has been “compressed.” From a scientific perspective, the brain perceives time based on: the number of experiences; the level of attention; and the amount of memory formed More new experiences → more memory → time feels longer Less variation → fewer memories → time feels faster That is why childhood feels longer because everything was experienced for the first time. Perhaps there is another reason closer to home where we are too busy . When we: focus on tasks; move from one responsibility to another; and operate on routine We rarely pause to truly experience time itself. We go through our days without fully living them.
