page 2 It helps tyres: become stronger; resist wear and tear; handle heat more effectively; and last significantly longer In simple terms it transformed the tyre from something fragile into something durable and reliable. But there is more. Carbon black also protects tyres from UV damage. Without it, sunlight would slowly break down the rubber, causing cracks and reducing lifespan. So the black colour is not just a result of the material. It is part of the protection. That is why, even today, tyres remain black not because we lack creativity but because it works best. Could we make coloured tyres? Yes. Technically, it is possible. But coloured tyres would: wear out faster; be less durable; and be more expensive to maintain So the choice is clear. Not for appearance but for performance. Designed not to look good, but to perform well. What started as a limitation became a standard and over time, we stopped questioning it because it simply works. It made me reflect on something deeper. In life, we often place value on what is visible. What looks good. What stands out. But just like tyres what truly matters is not always how something looks. Sometimes, it is about how well it performs. How long it lasts and how much it can endure. Pressure. Challenges. Difficult situations. We don’t always choose them. But they strengthen us. Just like carbon black strengthens the tyre these experiences shape us. Quietly. Over time. They may not always be visible. They may not always be comfortable but they build resilience and perhaps that is the point. Not everything in life is designed to look perfect. Some things are designed to last. So the next time we are on the road perhaps we take a moment. Not just to notice what is obvious but to appreciate what works quietly in the background. Sometimes what we see as ordinary carries a story of strength behind it. Dr. Diyana Hassim Head of Corporate Communications Public Service Department
