Our keyboard . We type emails, messages and reports. Sometimes for hours and yet, most of us have never really stopped to ask, “Why does the keyboard look the way it does?”. The layout we use today, QWERTY , dates back to the 1870s. It was originally designed for mechanical typewriters. Back then, typing too quickly caused a problem. Each key was connected to a metal arm. When pressed too fast in sequence, these arms would collide and jam. So the layout was intentionally arranged to slow typists down slightly . Just enough to prevent the machine from getting stuck. What’s interesting is this: Technology has evolved; Typewriters are no longer mechanical; Keyboards are now digital; and Devices are faster, smarter, and more efficient. But the layout? It stayed.
