page 2 For many, retirement marks the closing of a career. But for Dr. Yap, this moment carries something deeper. It is not just about stepping away from work. It is about stepping towards something more important. His child, recently diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger’s and in that moment, it became clear. This was not just a transition. It was a choice. We often speak about sacrifice. But the truth is, the most profound sacrifices are rarely announced especially by fathers. They do what needs to be done. Quietly without seeking recognition and today, we witnessed one of those moments. I am still far from retirement but even from where I stand, I can begin to understand a small part of what it means. To spend years building a routine, waking up with purpose, going to work, contributing, being part of something larger than yourself. Then one day that rhythm changes. Psychologically, this is more than just a change in schedule. It is a shift in identity. A sense of loss but also a redefinition. A new meaning. A different kind of purpose. For those approaching retirement, perhaps the preparation is not only financial but mental and emotional. To slowly reframe: From “what I am leaving behind” to “what I am stepping into.” To invest in relationships. To rediscover parts of yourself beyond your profession. To build a life where meaning is not tied only to work, but to presence. In Dr. Yap’s case, that presence matters deeply because children with ADHD (Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and Asperger’s, part of the autism spectrum experience the world differently. They are not less. They are simply wired differently. They may need more structure, more patience, more understanding, and above all consistent presence. These are neurodevelopment conditions and while they are not something one “acquires” later in life, support from family plays a crucial role in helping the child thrive. So, what we witnessed today was not just a farewell. It was a father choosing to be present. Fully. Intentionally without hesitation. There is something deeply powerful about that because careers can be rebuilt. Titles can be replaced but moments with family especially when they need you most are irreplaceable. Dr. Diyana Hassim Head of Corporate Communications Public Service Department Dr. Yap, Your years of service have contributed more than what words can capture. But today, what stood out even more was your humanity. Your strength. Your quiet decision to choose what truly matters. Perhaps that is the greatest legacy of all. Not just what we achieve in our careers but what we choose, when it matters most.
