Despite living in an age of satellites, social media and instant access to information, there are still locations that remain closed to the vast majority of humanity. Among them is Area 51 in the United States, a military facility that has fuelled speculation and intrigue for decades. There is also North Sentinel Island in India's Andaman Islands, home to an indigenous community that has lived largely isolated from the modern world and is protected from outside contact. In Norway stands the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, often referred to as the world's "doomsday vault", safeguarding millions of seed samples as a precaution against future global catastrophes. 13 Forbidden Places in the World: Why Some Doors Are Meant to Remain Closed
page 2 In France, the famous Lascaux Cave, home to prehistoric paintings estimated to be more than 17,000 years old, has been closed to the public because human presence can accelerate the deterioration of these irreplaceable works. Meanwhile, Snake Island in Brazil is considered one of the most dangerous islands in the world due to its dense population of highly venomous snakes, resulting in strict access restrictions. Yet these are only a few examples of places that remain inaccessible to most people. 13 Forbidden Places in the World 1. Area 51, United States A military installation that has become the subject of speculation and mystery for decades. 2. North Sentinel Island, India An island inhabited by an indigenous community protected from outside contact. 3. Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Norway The world's largest seed repository, designed to safeguard food security for future generations. 4. Lascaux Cave, France A prehistoric cave closed to visitors in order to preserve ancient artwork. 5. Snake Island (Ilha da Queimada Grande), Brazil An island populated by thousands of venomous snakes and regarded as one of the world's most dangerous locations. 6. Vatican Apostolic Archives, Vatican City A historical archive containing centuries of important documents. 7. Coca-Cola Vault, United States The secure location where the secret Coca-Cola formula is preserved. 8. Mezhgorye, Russia A closed town associated with strategic national facilities. 9. Room 39, North Korea A unit often associated with the country's strategic financial operations. 10. Ise Grand Shrine, Japan A sacred site with highly restricted access in order to preserve religious traditions. 11. Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, United States A government emergency facility designed to ensure continuity of operations during national crises. 12. Niihau, Hawaii A privately owned island with restricted access to preserve local culture and traditions. 13. Poveglia Island, Italy An island closed to the public and often associated with a unique and mysterious history. Although these places differ in location, history and purpose, they all share one common characteristic.
page 3 They are protected because something is considered more important than human curiosity. Some are protected for reasons of national security. Some are protected to preserve fragile ecosystems. Some are protected to safeguard historical heritage. Others are protected to ensure that future generations can continue to benefit from them. As human beings, curiosity is part of our nature. In fact, the more restricted something is, the more intrigued we often become by what lies beyond it and yet the more interesting question is not what exists behind a closed door. The more important question is why that door needs to remain closed. This is where I see a connection to two important values within Malaysia MADANI: Respect and Trust. Respect is not limited to respecting individuals. It also means respecting boundaries, processes, responsibilities and rules established for the greater good. North Sentinel Island, for example, reminds us that not everything needs to be explored, altered or touched simply because we have the ability to do so. Sometimes, respect means allowing something to remain exactly as it is. At the same time, these places also remind us of the importance of Trust. In modern society, it is impossible for any one person to know everything. We rely on scientists to protect ecosystems. We rely on security professionals to protect nations. We rely on researchers to preserve the integrity of knowledge and discovery. We rely on institutions to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to them. Trust does not mean accepting everything without question. Rather, it means recognising that some decisions are made based on expertise, experience and considerations that may not be immediately visible to us. Of course, every institution must continue to be transparent, accountable and open to constructive feedback. At the same time, a mature society also understands that not every boundary exists to restrict. Some exist to protect. Some exist to preserve and some exist to ensure that what is valuable today can still be inherited by future generations tomorrow. Perhaps that is the true lesson behind the world's forbidden places. It is not about what lies behind a closed door. It is about understanding why some doors are meant to remain closed because in life, not everything that can be accessed needs to be accessed and not every boundary exists to hold us back. Some boundaries exist because there are things worth respecting and some things worth trusting. Reflection Corner When we encounter a rule, a boundary or a process that we do not fully understand, our first instinct is often to question it. Sometimes that is necessary but sometimes it is also worth asking: What is this boundary protecting?
page 4 The most mature societies are not those without rules. They are societies that understand the purpose behind them. After all, not every closed door hides a secret. Some are protecting something worth preserving. MADANI Values: Respect (Hormat) & Trust (Keyakinan) Dr. Diyana Hassim Head of Corporate Communications Public Service Department
Kadangkala, menghormati sesuatu bermaksud membiarkannya kekal sebagaimana adanya.
