On many Raya tables, alongside traditional Malay biscuits and kuih raya, you may also find snacks such as maruku or kacang putih . These flavours are closely associated with Indian Malaysian culture, yet they have become part of the festive spread in many homes. It is a quiet reminder that Malaysian traditions often grow through sharing and adapting across cultures. Somehow, it all feels perfectly natural. The Raya Colour Debate Another uniquely Malaysian Raya tradition is choosing the family theme colour. Weeks before Hari Raya, many families will start discussing what colour everyone should wear. Sometimes the decision is simple. Sometimes it becomes a full family discussion. Should it be emerald green? Dusty pink? Navy blue? Or the always-safe option, classic black and gold? Whatever the choice, the goal is usually the same: everyone in the family wearing baju raya in the same colour . Once the photos are taken on the morning of Raya, the colour theme becomes part of the family’s Raya memory for that year.
