The highways start filling up. Cars move slowly along long stretches of road as families begin their journey home. For many Malaysians, balik kampung is not just a trip, it is almost a yearly ritual. Some travellers will spend 10, 15, even 20 hours on the road just to make it home in time for Raya morning. Meanwhile, those who do not have a kampung are busy preparing in their own way. The city has its own version of Raya preparation. Curtains are changed. Floors are cleaned. Kuih raya are carefully arranged into glass jars. Everyone seems to have a role. There is always someone in charge of cooking. Someone responsible for decorating the house and of course, someone whose very important job is to buy ice at the last minute. From the night before Raya until the third day of Raya, houses are filled with visitors, laughter and endless plates of food. It is exhausting. But it is also something uniquely Malaysian. If There’s No Balik Kampung Traffic Jam, Is It Even Raya?
