94 2. Poor Empathy Wilson, et. al. (2017) explained that, HFASD was recognized as a distinct neurodevelopmental disorder. It is a form of neurodivergence making the way their brain interacts with external input such as facial expression, tonality or language are different from that in a neurotypical person. This feature restricted people with HFASD to notice subtle change in facial expression, body language and react to the person’s need accordingly. Failure to see and feel from others’ perception makes them an unempathetic person. This can better be explained with scenario below: Mr. XYZ did not fulfilled the boss’s requirement and make the boss angry at him. His first thought was “I made a mistake and I need correct it”. However, after repetitive amendments, the result was still not satisfied by boss. Boss started to ignore him, showing poker face and assign the job to someone else. Instead of feeling sorry or guilty, Mr. XYZ will interpret the situation as “boss is stressful with the task, it was challenging that he has to ask another person to do” without relate his boss’s emotional expression was actually a sign of warning to him. Having poor cognitive empathy and affective empathy become obstacle for individual with HFASD at workplace and at home as they failed to recognize when a situation is upsetting and make adjustment accordingly. In the other hand, superior and colleagues are frustrated and give up dealing with them after repetitively sending signals and hints. The problem of lack of empathy is not limit to other but also to the individuals with HFASD themselves. Failure to recognize emotions restrict them to be mindful on the emotional changes occurred within self and unable to resolve the emotional distress because they “didn’t even noticed the existence”. “Mr. JQK didn’t noticed his temper tantrum become more often after the present of his first baby. He said “… Yaa… The crying voice are loud, but as a father I shouldn’t complain on this, I just have to bear with it”.
