page 1 The Internet as a Teacher: Are We Getting Smarter or More Confused? There was a time when “doing research” meant flipping through thick encyclopedias or spending hours in the library. Today, it only takes a few taps on the screen. The internet has become our most accessible teacher, always available and infinitely resourceful. However, as we rely more on this digital tutor, a crucial question arises, are we really getting smarter, or just more confused? The Bright Side of a Borderless Classroom There’s no denying that the internet has revolutionised how we learn. From mastering Excel formulas to perfecting the art of cooking nasi lemak, there’s a tutorial for almost everything. Platforms like YouTube, TikTok EDU and other e-learning platforms have made the learning process quick, visual, and engaging, bringing complex knowledge to life. In Malaysia, the digital learning wave accelerated during the pandemic. Schools shifted to Google Classroom and Zoom, while platforms like SPMflix, EduWebTV, and DELIMa became essential tools. Teachers discovered creative ways to reach students, from conducting science experiments through short videos to using social media for class discussions. The walls of the classroom expanded far beyond the school gates. Public officers, too, have entered this new learning space. The National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) and various government agencies now offer online courses in leadership, data analytics, and digital governance. Webinars, virtual town halls, and e-learning modules allow public servants to continuously upskill without leaving their desks.
