In the Māori language, “kia ora” is not just a greeting. It carries meanings of life, health, and wellbeing. One word. But deeply meaningful and perhaps, it reflects the entire journey I experienced there. When I was informed that I had been selected to participate in the Strategic Governance, Capability & Communication (SGCC) 2026 Programme in New Zealand, I felt a mix of emotions. The programme is organised by the Institute of Accountancy Research, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), in collaboration with the Persatuan Badan Berkanun Malaysia (PBBM). Excitement, of course but more than that, a sense of responsibility. The first time I travelled abroad for an official programme was in 2012, for the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) programme in New Delhi, India for one month. Fourteen years later being selected again felt different. This was no longer just about experience. It was about trust. I am deeply grateful to the top management of Public Service Department (PSD) for this opportunity, especially to Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan bin Haji Abdul Aziz, Director-General of Public Service (KPPA). Opportunities like this do not come often and it is never just about who is selected but what we choose to do with it. The programme took us from Auckland to Rotorua, then to Wellington via Taupo and Palmerston North, before returning to Auckland for academic sessions and conferences. But the part I was most excited about was more than an 8-hour bus journey. I laughed at myself. In Malaysia, I rarely take long bus rides. But this time “I’m going to ride a bus, in New Zealand”. I genuinely looked forward to it. Kia ora, New Zealand — A Kia ora, New Zealand — A Journey, A Trust Journey, A Trust
