Laporan Tahunan Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam 2018
This has raise awareness for the importance of the elements of psychology wellbeing among people. A variety views and calls have been made for the psychology wellbeing of people to be strengthened without any delays. Social activists’ figure such as Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye had often spoken out for the importance of psychology wellbeing to be taken seriously by the government. The latest urge voiced out by him relates to the development of the psychology indexes as reported in medias. Nevertheless, the beginning of the development of psychology wellbeing index has been initiated by the Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) following the Human Capital Psychological Conference 2017. Insistence from the social activist’s figure is in line with the efforts taken in developing the Malaysia Psychology Wellbeing Index. This statistic, by analogy is akin to small torn pieces of a beautiful portrait. The torn pieces defaced the aesthetic beauty of the portrait. Such is the case of the country’s wellbeing. The portrait is a picture of the holistic wellbeing whereas the torn damaged pieces are the issues that has arisen due to psychology wellbeing in the society as stated above. These issues show the illbeing in the society that covers elements of objective being (economic and social) and subjective wellbeing (psychology). Scholars and policy makers acquiesce the importance of the subjective wellbeing (psychology) as a complement to a prosperous nation. (Diener & Seligman 2004; Diener at al.2015). The subjective indicators are capable of providing a wider perspective in relation to quality of life as opposed to simply relying on the objective indication such as economy and social per se. Although the economy and social indicators are objective by nature and widely accepted, it has its own shortcomings and is inadequate to demonstrate the quality of life in a nation cumulatively (National Research Council, 2013). The issues relevant to psychology wellbeing should not be taken lightly as it can have a big impact to the prosperity, security, satisfaction and sustainability of life as well as on the image and perception of people from the outside or foreign investor towards this country. These elements are closely connected to an individual’s psychology wellbeing whom are bearing the responsibility of building the community and nation as a whole. Scrutinization of western countries over several decades found that even though the economic growth seems rapid and the income of the people have risen, relative assessment on life satisfaction was found to be at a static level. The situation has raised questions relating to the relevance of the country’s policies that emphasize on the economic growth but failed to bring happiness and joy to its citizen. (Dolan & White, 2007). According to this finding, subjective questions such as “What is true happiness” could only be answered with the view that true happiness is intertwined to “Psychological Wellbeing”. Thus, with that answer, efforts of moving forward from the finding is to assess, study and identify the level of “Psychological Wellbeing” of Malaysian from the formation of the “Malaysia Psychology Wellbeing Indexes”. The findings from the index will provide a more accurate picture of the condition and the needs of the people in Malaysia in making Malaysia a country that will attain a meaningful, flourishing and preserved happiness. In a global environment that keeps on being more challenging, individuals’ abilities are shoved/sharpened to ensure that viability of life are constantly at the top level. Faced with these challenges, the government has given the appropriate focus in increasing the level of wellbeing of the people. To achieve this intention, a development strategy that is holistic with the focus on the balance of all three national wellbeing components; economic prosperity, social development and psychology wellbeing, needs to be implemented. *Figures in Diagram 1 and 2 shows that the current issues in the society are serious and must be dealt with urgently.
