29 Varia Ranah: Sorotan Ilmiah Perkhidmatan Awam RESEARCH DESCRIPTION The Role of Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Established in 1998, the role Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is a regulatory body that implements and promote the Government's national policy objectives for the communications and multimedia sector. The Commission charged with overseeing the new regulatory framework for the converging telecommunications and broadcasting industries and online activities. MCMC has expanded its capabilities and stayed vigilant against global digital threats in safeguarding Malaysia’s cyber environment. Under the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission Act (1998), MCMC puts forth its primary responsibility as the cyber domain regulator by implementing policies and enforcing cyber laws. Malaysia’s cyber domain is regulated diligently under MCMC’s legislative acts. Those acts based on the foundations of administrative and sector clarity. They aim at providing a universal regulation that fits all types of definition available in managing the digital market and services. Thus, any loopholes in regard to licensing and cyber offense breached within Malaysia’s cyber domain are covered. Act 233 Section (a) facilitates in countering illegal usage of network facilities focusing on the creation and dissemination of fake information. The coverage also includes other forms of digital conversation such as comments, suggestion, and requests. Given any time that the receiver feels threaten or abused, the act gives the power to conduct law enforcement upon the sender.
