Understanding Narratives Carry & Snodgrass (1999) and Harmon (2012) concluded that a narrative or story is essentially an account of a series of related events, experiences whether true or fictitious. The word was coined and derived from the Latin verb narrare (to tell), which is derived from the adjective gnarus (knowing or skilled) as depicted by Traupman (1966). Along with argumentation, description, and exposition, narration, broadly defined, is one of four rhetorical modes of discourse. Narratives are often applied in information warfare as a tool to engage and win the hearts and minds of people. Narratives are used either in applying black, grey or white propaganda, information operations and tactical diplomacy. Classic narratives like Machaivelli’s The Prince, Sun Tzu’s Art of War, Huttington’s Clash of Civilisations and the Remaking of the New World Order, have immense effect on current day narratives. Among current negative narratives can be found either verbally or in writings that are in abundance across social media are ISIS recruitment, racism towards mainland China and Chinese with regards of being the cause of the Covid19, and Islamophobia.
