Thus, this eliminates the benefits that flow from building long-term trust, customary practices and familiarity with clients and employers. In this scenario, no party has an incentive to invest significantly in a relationship that only lasts until the next gig comes along; (ix) In a gig economy, the incumbent would have to continuously upgrade their skills and industry knowledge to stay relevant. They would have to unceasingly persist in upgrading their knowledge with current industry trends to keep a competitive edge by taking inter alia online classes or buying the newest skill books relevant to their industry. Hence, the onus will be on the incumbent to upgrade their skills to keep landing gigs; (x) Being a freelancer, would require the incumbent to plan ahead their own retirement plans and to purchase their own healthcare benefits, both of
