508 Varia Ranah: Sorotan Ilmiah Perkhidmatan Awam (iv) The gig economy can benefit workers, businesses, and consumers by making work more adaptable to the needs of the moment, thereby allowing creativity. For example, an office worker can simultaneously pick-up passengers as a ride-hailing driver on their way to work and back, thus supplementing their income; (v) Employers have the flexibility to hire part-time or temporary employees to take care of their business during busier periods thus negating the action of hiring permanent workers; and (vi) On the side of the employee, they have this yearning on the need to move around or take multiple positions to afford the lifestyle that they crave. As employees generally have the penchant to change careers many times throughout their lives, so the gig economy can be viewed as a reflection of this occurring on a large scale. The Downside: (i) The is a tendency towards an erosion of traditional economic relationships between workers, businesses, and clients; (ii) Those who don't engage or are adept in using technological services such as the Internet and its motley of applications, tend to be left behind by the benefits of the gig economy as the role of social media platforms play an important and crucial conduit between the provider and the recipient; (iii) With the increase in the number of gig economy jobs, it will soon appear that traditional businesses will continue to off-load risk to the individual wherever possible. The continuation of this trend will invariably lead to a situation whereby traditional jobs with benefits and salaries that keep pace with the cost of living would eventually face reduction in numbers and fade away into the sunset! (iv) For the organization, the gig economy can make it harder for full-time employees to develop fully in their careers since temporary employees are often cheaper to hire and more flexible in their availability.
