507 Varia Ranah: Sorotan Ilmiah Perkhidmatan Awam workers who would like to make a little extra income by picking up ride-hailing fares along the way to the office and back. Here, a pertinent point worth observing is that gigs move the risk away from organizations right to the pedestal of the individual. Henceforth, this is in stark divergence to the secure 9-to-5 corporate working arrangement that most occupations are familiar with. Hence, it challenges the norm of the traditional economy of full-time workers who rarely change their current occupation with a view towards imbibing a lifetime career (Swaniker, 2017; Chappelow, 2019; Vulcan Post, 2019). As much as the gig economy has its upsides, it is important to note that it also has its undesirable attributes. As adapted from Swaniker (2017), both perspectives are elucidated below: The Attributes: (i) The gig economy is based on flexible, temporary, or freelance jobs. This often involves connecting with clients or customers through an online platform. This helps independent contracting work as many gig jobs do not require the incumbent to clock-in to the office to work. The work can be conducted anywhere as long as there is internet access and work can be done when the incumbent feels inspired; (ii) As a freelancer, the individual no longer subscribes to the current traditional work culture and schedule. Instead, the incumbent chooses the type of work they plan to embark and who to work with, without having a superior breathing down the neck on the incumbent; (iii) The incumbent has the flexibility to make their own decision in leading both their personal and gig lives, especially on the amount of work to take-upon without disrupting their personal lives. Hence, it gives them the opportunity to make choices that suits their personality and unique needs;
