Further, those who are on the brink of retirement or already retired are also drawn to gig work because it channels-in income (supplementary or otherwise) without a major time commitment. Hence, the gig economy lends credence to people from all walks of life and economy status. At the other end of the spectrum, to the user of a gig service, the general outcome is the availability of cheaper and more efficient service delivery both in terms of services and/or product rendered (Petriglieri, Ashford and Wrzesniewski, 2018). To reiterate further, two (2) notable major segments in the gig economy ecosystem are firstly, the knowledge-based gigs such as the independent consultants and secondly, are the services-based ones, inter alia ride-hailing (or e-hailing) and errand services (Chappelow, 2019; McCluskey, 2019). The above statement will be further elaborated below. To delve further, there are three (3) inherent components that have a role in successfully executing a gig economy. They are firstly the independent worker that is paid by the gig, next is the consumers who require a specific service and finally the companies that connects the worker to the consumer in a direct manner. This connection includes application-based technology platforms companies such as inter alia Foodpanda, GrabCar, Airbnb and Grabfood that acts as the medium through which the independent worker is connected to and ultimately paid by the consumer (Istrate, Harris 2017). According to a study by McCluskey (2019) from PricewaterhouseCoopers, it is envisaged that in the year 2020, the gig economy is expected to be worth some US63 billion (RM273 billion) globally and is expected to inject an approximate US2.63 trillion (RM11.4 trillion) into the global economy by 2025, barring unforeseen circumstances. The study further stresses that by the year 2020, up to 20% of the world workforce will comprise of contract workers who are on short-term or freelance assignments and forecasts that this will pose a direct challenge to both resource management and human capital development in the coming years.
