POIN NYATA • Most netizens are often influenced by a myriad of fake news that managed to manipulate their cognition through semantic representation to a certain degree • The public service is seen as lacking the skills to defend itself from criticism or misinformation that has gone viral in the social media which contributes to negative images portrayed against the service • The social cognition towards the public service are often negative which enforces negative perception • …the current social media crisis in Malaysia revolves around the notion of “power over” that the society has control over the public service • Only a small group of “opinion leaders” are allowed to make statements but are refrained from commenting on policies. • Effort to elucidate these negative perceptions requires detailed collaboration among public servants at all levels across schemes as well as a proactive and reactive action to mitigate and address the crisis • Current negative narratives can be found either verbally or in writings that are in abundance across social media are ISIS recruitment, racism towards mainland China and Chinese with regards of being the cause of the Covid19, and Islamophobia • A racist narrative response that was posted by the ex-Miss Universe Malaysia beauty queen; Samantha Katie Jameson had triggered anger among Malaysian netizens that generally oppose the concept of racism and are perpetuating the BLM movement • In terms of gender, semantic representation is reflected through masculine hegemony, substantive equality, representations/ portrayal of women • Semantics is the study of meaning in language that relates to the representations of reality through cultural (connotative) or popular composition of native speakers (collocative) meaning • Semantic representation and interpretation of information may not be straight forward and are subjected to the perception of reality by individuals • The two-step flow communication theory explains that most people form their opinions under the influence of opinion leaders who are influenced by the information from the mass media
