Social media should be considered as a double-edged sword as it has its own drawbacks if it is used excessively. Social media not only can be used to express views and disseminate information about one but it also can be used to propagate lies, and slanders to ruin another people’s personality. In recent years, government bodies and their employees have had to respond to dramatic shifts in public expectations to political and government discourse. Innovative policy makers and their staff are quickly adapting by creating highly engaging social content to rally follower support—while also remaining fully compliant and secure. For any government body wanting to capture and maintain public sentiment and engagement, embracing the new era of social media discourse is critical. However, systematic research regarding the assessment of the risks associated with social media in the public sector is lacking. Thus, public sector practitioners may often refer to findings from the private sector, which can be misleading due to the different nature of the private and the public sector. Therefore, it is recommended to further study empirically examines the risk factors that come with engaging the public via social media and methods on how to manage the negative perception that comes with the usage of social media in the public sector.
