141 VARIA RANAH 2023 Malaysia MADANI: Promote Civic Consciousness, Unity and Social Justice in Public Service INTRODUCTION Malaysia is a diverse country with a rich cultural heritage that is the world's envy. However, its diverse population has also been a source of tension and conflict, especially regarding civic consciousness, unity, and social justice issues. Recently, the concept of Malaysia MADANI, introduced by Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has gained traction to address these issues and promote a more harmonious society. At its core, Malaysia MADANI is about building an inclusive, participatory, and just civil society, which means promoting the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law and ensuring that all citizens have an equal opportunity to participate in the political and economic life of the country. One of the critical elements of Malaysia MADANI is civic consciousness, which refers to the awareness and understanding of one's rights and responsibilities as a citizen that includes a commitment to democratic values, such as freedom of expression, assembly, and association, as well as a willingness to engage in civic activities that promote the common good. Malaysia MADANI aims to build a society where all citizens actively participate in shaping the country's future by promoting civic consciousness. Another essential aspect of Malaysia MADANI is unity, which refers to the sense of common purpose and shared identity that binds the diverse communities of Malaysia together, which means recognizing and celebrating the cultural and religious diversity of the country while also promoting a shared sense of national identity based on common values and aspirations. By promoting unity, Malaysia MADANI aims to build a society where all citizens feel valued and included, regardless of their background or beliefs. Finally, social justice is a crucial pillar of Malaysia MADANI that refers to the fair distribution of resources and opportunities in society and the protection of the rights of marginalized and vulnerable groups, including promoting economic growth and development that benefits all segments of society, as well as ensuring that fundamental rights such as education, healthcare, and housing are accessible to all. By promoting social justice, Malaysia MADANI aims to build a society where all citizens have a fair and equal chance to succeed. One of the critical challenges facing Malaysia MADANI is overcoming the legacy of discrimination and inequality that has characterized Malaysian society for many years includes addressing issues such as ethnic and religious tensions, economic inequality, and political corruption (Ahmad & Mamat, 2020; Bernama, 2023; Chin & Soon, 2020; Kam, Oboh, Othman & Sufian, 2022; Ku & Abdullateef, 2020; Lim & Tan, 2021; Tey & Moghavvemi, 2021; Shukri, Aminudin, Jamaiudin & Diah, 2020; Wahab & Mahmood, 2020). To address these challenges, Malaysia MADANI advocates for several reforms, including greater transparency and accountability in government, more excellent protection of human rights and civil liberties, and more significant investment in social programs and infrastructure that benefit all segments of society. Overall, Malaysia MADANI represents a bold and ambitious vision for building a more inclusive, participatory, and just society in Malaysia. While many challenges exist, the concept has already gained significant support from various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political parties, and the general public. By promoting civic consciousness, unity, and social justice, Malaysia MADANI has the potential to transform Malaysia into a model for other countries seeking to build more just and equitable societies.
