86 Thriving implies a psychological state that emphasizes the sense of progress or moving forward in self-development within dual dimensions of personal growth, specifically learning and vitality (Spreitzer et al., 2010). It involves an adaptation process that includes the development of new skills, attitudes, and meanings beyond the previous level of an individual's functioning (Smith and Ascough, 2016). Additionally, thriving is evidenced by an employee's high level of personal commitment and performance, instigating vitality and positive energy (Britt & Jex, 2015). In support of this argument, Brown et al. (2017) suggest two important components of thriving: development and success. The development component includes progressive enhancements in terms of physical, psychological, or social aspects, whereas the component of success relates to a variety of temporally and contextually relevant outcomes such as wealth and attainment, leading them to view thriving as the integrated experience of development and success. When facing challenges, including stressors or unpleasant situations in the workplace, individual employees may typically respond in three ways: survival, recovery, and thriving (O'Leary & Ickovics, 1995).  Survival refers to the state in which employees continue to function despite impairment. Employees who are in survival experience an imbalanced state of well-being and performance. They might be seen as high achievers, but they have a low sense of well-being, which depletes their energy and vitality. Conversely, they may also be perceived as having a high level of well-being but show impairment in their task execution performance, hindering their success (Brown et al., 2017).
